Amsterdam Events

Below is a list of the most popular annual events held in Amsterdam.

There is a bohemian side to the Dutch character that manifests in Amsterdam whenever the city hosts art events, festivals and national holidays, all celebrated in such grandiose fashion that some last for days and span locations throughout the entire city. What's more Amsterdam hosts enough maritime, film, fashion and dance events that boast the grand title “biggest in the world” to wow any visitor. Don’t take our word for it, visit and see for yourself.

SPRING SEASON

March: Restaurant Week Treat yourself to a delectable three-course meal at a starred restaurant for as little as 25 euro! That’s a bargain that will allow any gourmet to tickle their taste buds or to impress a date.

April: World Press Photo Catch the exhibition of award winning snaps by the world’s best photographers at Amsterdam’s oldest church the Oude Kerk. An inspiring event held in an inspiring setting.

27 April: King's Day or Koningsdag is one of Amsterdam’s biggest, brightest and boldest festivals during which revellers don their orange gear and fill the streets singing, dancing and drinking. Being Amsterdam the party also happens on the water with hundreds of boats full of merry-makers sailing the canals. There is also a nationwide free market where locals set up stalls outside their houses selling food, drink and all sorts of second hand items . All of the clubs organise parties out side with DJs, sound equipment and bars.

This is also a great time to visit the children’s events at Vondelpark with your kids.

SUMMER FESTIVALS

August: Gay Pride This extravaganza of dancing, drinking and music features a glittering canal parade of nearly 100 boats filled with partygoers. The pride lasts for nearly a week and features a variety of festivities and activities throughout town.

June – August: Openluchttheater Every summer the theatre stage in Vondel park welcomes a host of events. Beside theatre one can catch stand-up comedy, music, performance and children’s events among others.

AUTUMN EVENTS

September: Open Monument Days This is the only time of year when private homes and venues open doors to the public. Seize the opportunity to see palatial period buildings from the Golden Age or any other venues of notable architectural and engineering achievement.

October: Dance Event The biggest clubbing event in Europe draws partygoers in the tens of thousands as DJs rock the city from every club, bar, cafe and park. Furthermore, the daytime programme incorporates dozens of business, technical and creative events for professionals working in the music industry.

November: IDFA The International Documentary Film festival is a major documentary summit that would appeal equally to filmmakers and an audience with a passion for documentaries.

November: Cannabis Cup also known as High Times is the time of year when people sample and rate cannabis treats. Take the chance to learn about the cultivation and production of different varieties or simply get high and party at the Melkweg, Amsterdam’s iconic club.

WINTER FESTIVALS

New Year’s Eve You haven't experienced a truly loud celebration if you haven’t spent New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam. The fireworks are just one side of the festive din that drowns the city as the Dutch celebrate as wildly as they can.

January: Chinese New Year Not as loud or as boozy as its Dutch counterpart but much more colourful. Dancing dragons, floats and Chinese culinary fare are not to be missed.

BIANNUAL EVENTS

London Calling Twice a year, in March and later in November, UK rock and pop musicians and bands give concerts in Amsterdam inviting locals and tourists to party.

Fashion Week is held twice a year, once in January when models show spring and summer collections and once in July to present winter fashion. The major appeal are the numerous free events open to the public and many markets selling rare boutique items.
